Powder Coatings

Coverage in Colors

Background

Powder coating involves the application of engineered powdered polymers  via spray, followed by melting and cross-linking of the polymers to form a durable, pore-free organic coating.  Pigments and dyes can be blended in to provide infinitessimal color options.

The first step in the process is the pre-treatment.  This step is typified by the addage "cleanliness is close to godliness".  Parts must be cleaned of any debris, machining oils, release agents, lubricants, or pizza grease in order for the powder coat to properly adhere.  The selection of an optimal pretreatment process is driven by the metal alloy and what class of dirt/oil/grease needs to be removed.  Specialty Finishes has the expertise and cleaning processes to get the job done right.

For best adhesion of the coating to the substrate, the next step in the process should be texturing surface of the part which, at a micron-level, significantly increases the surface area on the part to achieve maximum bonding adhesion.  This can be accomplished by various means, and Specialty Finishes will choose the optimum process for your material, part design, and requirements.

Not All Powders are Created Equal

At a high level, powder coatings can be categorized by the base-polymer used, with each having unique advantages and disadvantages.

  • Polyurethanes
  • Polyesters
  • Epoxies
  • Hybrids
  • Nylons
  • Halar
  • Ryton
  • Vinyl

Let Specialty Finishes be your partner in selecting the proper system for your application.
